RARA Announces Aerobatics Performer for 54th National Championship Air Races

Reno, Nev. – The Reno Air Racing Association today announced that Brad Wursten Airshows will perform at the 54th National Championship Air Races this September 13th – 17th in his MXS-R aerobatic aircraft by MX aircraft.
“Brad Wursten brings power and performance to each airshow,” Mike Crowell, President and CEO of the Reno Air Racing Association said. “We are very excited for our fans to be able to watch as Brad pushes the envelope and amazes the crowd while remaining well within his tight margin of safety.”
Wursten’s plane, one of the most highly sophisticated airplanes in the world, features a complete carbon fiber airframe that weighs an impressive 1100 lbs. The Lycoming engine has 385 HP and can reach a top speed of over 300 MPH, a roll rate at 420 degrees per second, and “G” loading at +/- 15 “G’s”.
Wursten joins previously announced performers the Texas Flying Legends Museum.

Teamwork - Bill Kerchenfaut - RIP
“Individually

becomes a family. Pretty soon you realize it’s really about them. “– William

One of my favorite people in the world left us this November.
William Evan Kerchenfaut, “Kerch” to his
friends, was so much more than a “guy with a screwdriver” he was an amazing
mentor, a kind soul, and a winner.
For many of his closest friends, we were all treated to
these late evening phone calls that came to be known as “Kerch-a-thons”. He
would always start with “Am I interrupting anything?” almost apologizing for calling.
I was always happy to hear from him and sat in a comfy chair, poured myself a
glass of Merlot and prepared to get today’s life lesson.
Many of you know him, know of him, know his legacy – but let
me tell you a little bit about the Bill you didn’t know.
Bill grew up on a farm in Illinois. His dad owned a J3 Cub
and he learned to fly back then – seems that was how it was done back then. No
radios, no towers, no FAA – just jump in the Cub and go. He learned about hard
work, how to fix machines and how to constantly search for more knowledge.
He enlisted in the Air Force but wasn’t able to get a
coveted flying spot. He ended up in the next best thing, Aviation
Maintenance. Here he excelled.
Later he came to Air Racing. Kerch was always part of winning
teams, including Conquest, Dago Red, Strega, 232, and Voodoo. It wasn’t a
coincidence – he was a big part of those winning programs.
Winning was in his blood.
Working with great individuals including Darryl Greenamyer,
John Crocker, Tiger Destefani, Mike Brown, Bob Button, Stevo Hinton, Skip Holm,
and Bruce Lockwood, he was exposed to some of the finest.
When he started working with Darryl, he had never seen a
Bearcat before. But, he was a quick
learner and was later known to say, “If you want to really go fast, get a
Mustang”. So much for the Bearcat, I
guess.
He was known to say, “You need three things to win Reno,
good airplane, good pilot, and good crew”. All of those things need to work
together, all of them are important.
I wanted to share this with you, something that was shared
with all of us at his Memorial. And if you ever had the pleasure of sitting
with him for a while, you heard many of these. As you start the New Year,
please keep these Kerchisms in mind.

If there is a problem,
try to come up with a suggestion or a solution.
Perception is not
reality – TRUTH is REALITY.
Realize that people
are dynamic – they are in constant change.
It is OK to change
your mind based on new information.
Ask for help -- Offer
to help.
Praise each other for
a good job and for hard work.

Getting Ready for the Races 2016
It’s that time of year again – everyone is getting ready for
another exciting Reno Air Race week. There is a lot of new happenings, some
returning racers who were missed and other news to share. So let’s get started.
Sport Class
As we have said in the past, the Sport Class is the place to
be. The Class is coming off an amazingly successful PRS week with 54 pilots and
instructors, 48 planes flying a total of 500 sorties between the FAST Formation
event and PRS. That was 8 days of flying – and makes herding cats look easy.
They originally had 49 entries and are expecting a group of
44. This will allow them Gold, Silver, Bronze and Medallion Races. The guess is
you’d have to be over 400mph to win the gold. Over 300 to win the Silver and
270 would be a good time in Bronze and the Medallion race will be faster than
anything in the past as well.
The Gold group will see John Parker attempting to repeat in
his beautiful Thunder Mustang, Blue Thunder II. Jeff Lavelle is back with the
world’s fastest Glasair and we know he’s ready. Dave Sterling, Andrew Findlay
and Lynn Farnsworth are all in the hunt for the crown. Gary Mead and Vince
Walker may be there as well – and who knows what Kevin Eldredge in Relentless has
up his sleeve.

Two fan favorites should be back this year, Elliot Seguin is
signed up to bring back Darryl Greenamyer’s old ride, #33 with the help of Andy
Chiavetta. And Colleen Keller is slated to bring back Dennis Stutes old Super
Legacy. This will be a very exciting group to watch.
The other big news in the Sport Class is the inaugural
Slalom or Match Race. The concept will be one on one competition between two
Sport aircraft. Both aircraft will be on the course doing a side by side slalom
race. They will utilize the Formula/Biplane course. They practiced and trained for it during PRS
and it looked pretty fun! Currently they are looking for a bracket of 8 pilots with
single elimination. I’m pretty excited about seeing this and also interested in
the crowd’s interest in events like this for the future.

Jets
The Jet Class is also a growing group and they seem to be
working on a very competitive event this year. Rick Vandam in American Spirit
will be taking on last year’s winner Pete Zaccagnino in his Vampire. Sean
Cushing in Fast Company will also make it interesting. Zach McNeill is also
bringing a Vampire. This all sounds good to me. The Jets will again offer close
racing and a lot of fun!
Formula 1
This Class has been reinvigorated over the last few years. With
years of pilot and aircraft decline – we were concerned about the future of the
F1 Class -- but, not anymore! This year, they have a full field of 24 racers. To
put it in perspective, the last time they had a full field of 24 was in 2002.
The record was 29 in 1991.
Three things have happened to bring life back to the Class.
- Air Race 1 – while they did not have any contests this year, the excitement of a World Wide Air Race for Formula 1 sent several people scrambling to dig through the barn and get their airplanes flying again.
- GripLockTies and Creighton King put together the Slab Wing Dash for Cash. $1000 Cash Money (as Creighton likes to say) will go to the fastest Slab Wing Cassutt (or other Slab Wing racer) He is putting up the money for Fastest Speed (determined by Qualifying time and Race Speed – there is a formula, of course.) I think it’s a great idea – money talks, as we know!
- And the final element is a sense of camaraderie this group has developed. Between Justin Phillipson and his West Coast operation and Phil Goforth and his Midland, TX based Fly Boyz Race Camp and the IF1 Doctor, Steve Tumlin – there is just renewed interest and support for those just starting out in IF1 Air Racing.

This Class will be very exciting to watch this year. And –
all you need to do is wake up early enough to be there at the start. You
shouldn’t miss it!
Biplanes
Biplanes are having an interesting time this year also. With
Tom Aberle announcing that he and Phantom are taking the year off – there is an
open spot at the top. I know several of the Gold Racers have been putting in
the extra effort to get the win. Jeff Rose is probably the favorite in his bright
yellow Mong, Reno Rabbit. Of all the racers on the roster this year, he has the
fastest time in the past. But – that doesn’t account for what others have done
in the off-season. The Gold should be very exciting this year. And a New Champion will be crowned!
T6
It seems the T6 Class has the same three guys at the top
each year. Nick Macy in his gorgeous Six Cat, John Lohmar in his Radial
Velocity and Dennis Buehne in Midnight Miss III. Last year had Chris Rushing
coming out of the Silver to give Dennis a run for his money at the end – but Dennis
still won.
This year, I have an idea things may be a bit different.
See, Eric Woelbing is not bringing his Bare Essentials this year. Nope, he’s
bringing Eddie Von Fossen’s old Miss TNT. I have a feeling he will be in the
mix for the Gold! T6 Racing is always close – and always fun to watch.
Unlimited
The Unlimited Class is having a difficult year. It seems
Rare Bear decided to take a year off at the same time that Strega decided to
take the year off. That brings a completely new view at the top of the
leaderboard.
Jay Consalvi was to fly Strega this year, but he will be
flying Czech Mate instead. So, I have a feeling most of the Strega fans will be
pulling for the little Yak this year.

Voodoo with Stevo Hinton will be there trying to win back the
title. They have been making subtle changes and testing during the off-season.
I know they will be ready to go.
And there is always everyone’s favorite Sunday Ride – Dreadnaught.
Dread has won before and if anyone else has a hiccup, this could be the Sanders’
year. They are always poised and ready to rock and roll.
The rest of the roster is light – yes, we know. But we need
to support the races during the lean years, so there will be better years. Just
be there! Wear your favorite team’s colors and let them know you are still
cheering them on!
The Show
THE BLUE ANGELS WILL BE THERE! They put on a heck of a
display and I cannot wait to see them back at Reno. We’ll see you there –
September 14-18! But, if you’re a REAL FAN – you’ll be there by the 11th
to watch all the Qualifying Action!

NBC Sports to Air One-Hour Show in March Featuring National Championship Air Races
Reno, Nev. – The Reno Air Racing Association (RARA)
announced that NBC Sports will air a one-hour show nationally on the NBC Sports
network featuring the National Championship Air Races on Sunday, March 27,
2016, 12:00pm Pacific Standard Time.
“The fact that the National Championship Air Races, the
fastest motor sport in the world, will be the feature of a one-hour show to air
on the NBC Sports network is an incredible opportunity for the Air Races to be
exposed to a national television audience,” said Mike Crowell, RARA chief
executive officer. “It also provides positive, national exposure for Reno and
the northern Nevada community.”
The one-hour special is being produced by JM Associates, an
Emmy Award-winning production company and leader in content development for
sports and outdoor broadcasts. Footage for the program was shot by JM
Associates at the 2015 National Championship Air Races. A trailer for the show

“We’ve been producing niche sports programs for over 40
years and when we were invited to see what the National Championship Air Races
in Reno, Nev. were all about, it took one quick look to know that this would be
a hit with a national audience,” said Mike McKinnis, vice president and

compelling characters and fast, high-tech flying machines is a recipe for
success.”

provided by the Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority as the

2015 Reno Air Races – Let's do it again!
Unlimited
As we go to press, we have 15 Unlimited Racers on the list –
that is one more than we had last year.
Who is missing? Well, 232 is still sitting at Stead with a bad
engine. As we all remember last year, Hoot Gibson showed off his deadstick
skills one more time to bring 232 down safely before he even had a chance to
qualify. I was so excited to see Hoot in 232 – I expected great things -- never
happened.
Now, 232 is for sale. People have kicked the tires with
their checkbook in hand, but nothing has been finalized. I look forward to
seeing 232 with another owner/pilot combo next year. But for now – she sits.

Strega

Jim Tobul in Korean War Hero is not on the list this year. He
has said that an Airshow commitment took him off the roster, but he has been
talking about coming back in 2016. Let me say, Jim was a wonderful addition to
the group and I certainly hope we have not seen the last of this great pilot
and team.
Czech Mate is also MIA this year. Rumors abound – but I don’t
like rumors. So let’s stay with the facts. Czech won’t be there. Sherman Smoot
is the new President of the Unlimited Class – so he’ll be there. If he is interested
in sharing why they are taking the year off, I’ll share. Otherwise, let’s hope
they are back in 2016.
Who is back!? Dan Martin is back! Lots of Dan Fans out there
who still remember his amazing races with Dago Red and Ridge Runner III. Dan
sold RRIII and is returning with Sal Rubino’s Grim Reaper. Grim is a beautiful
polished P-51. Not sure how fast she’ll be, but she sure is pretty. Sal went
through PRS and is listed as the Primary Pilot – but I bet Dan will get a
moment in the sun also. Sal will be there and is listed as the Primary. We know we'll get to see him in the air.
Speaking of Dans.. Dan Vance is also back in Speedball
Alice. Dan has been a fixture on the ramp at Reno and does double duty as the
Safety Pilot during Practice and Qualifying. We are happy to see him back for the whole
week.
And Daryl Bond’s Lady Jo is back on the roster also with Rob
Gordon flying her again. It’s very exciting to have the Santa Rosa crowd back
on the ramp.

One more new Racer/Pilot Combo is Dusty Dowd in his Yak 11,
Lylia. Dusty bought her from Bill Shepherd, who will be his alternate pilot. It
is very exciting to have a whole new team join us in September. My only concern
– with a top speed listed as 286mph – will she make the 300 mph cut?
Let’s see
what happens.
The fast guys are back – except Czech – and that is a good
thing. The Gold will probably include Voodoo with Steven Hinton piloting. He’s
earned that seat by working on Voodoo nearly full time during the off season.
Also destined for Gold will be Hoot Gibson in Strega. Yes,
these rumors are true. Let’s see what Hoot can do now that he finally has a
full functioning champ to fly.
And Rare Bear’s team has been very quiet and busy this year. Stewart
Dawson has been very serious during the off-season and I believe we may see a
very positive showing from our Texas Team.

Thom Richard will be racing in two classes this year;
Formula 1 with Hot Stuff and Unlimited with Precious Metal. What changes has
his team made this year? Very little specifics are out there about what has been done, but time will tell.
The Sanders are bringing all three of their Sea Furys again
this year. Dreadnaught – always a Gold Contender will have Dennis as the
Primary and Brian as the Alternate. They will also have Argonaut with Mark Watt
returning as Primary and 924 with Korey Wells. Brian and Dennis are Alternates
on Argo and 924. What we do is look at the helmet colors to figure out who is
flying!
Best guess has Curt Brown in Sawbones – another 3350 powered
Sea Fury – rounding out the Gold contenders. I remember when the Sawbones team
first showed up – they are now veterans and are really enjoying their rise to
fame.
This is going to be a great year!
Sport Class
At last count, 41 racers are on the list for Sport Class!
Last year we had 34 – and that was a LOT!
There are plenty of fast ones –
including the Thunder Mustangs – being raced by John Parker in Blue Thunder and
Class President Bob Mills in Clas Thunder. Dave Morss will be racing a gorgeous
Stewart S-51D – named, “Big Beautiful Doll” after the unbelievable P-51D that
was lost when the pilot jumped during an airshow at Duxford a few years ago. I
have no idea how fast Dave's S-51D will be – but she is adorable!
Only one NXT on the roster – Kevin Eldredge - but 10 Lancair Legacys. WOW!
Time will tell how fast they are. There are a smattering of other aircraft,
including Glasairs and Lansairs 360s and every flavor of RV with two EZs.
One name that is missing is Jeff LaVelle – the winner for
the last few years. Jeff has raced since 2007 and is taking the year off to
deal with some personal issues. We hope to see him back when he’s ready. A
great guy with a ton of talent. He'll be missed.
But, his absence allows
someone else to win the Gold. Who will it be? Kevin Eldredge? John Parker? Bob
Mills? Lynn Farnsworth? Gary Mead? Or maybe Dave Morss? Let’s see what happens.
Jets
We have 17 jets on the list – Joe Gano is back – and so is
Larry Lee. Many will remember Joe owned the black L-29 called Viper. He shared
the racing duties with Curt Brown until the oversized engines were outlawed. He’s
back in a white and red L-29 named Sluggo, sharing the racing with Jon Socolof.
And many will remember Larry Lee from the PRS incident where
he collided with another L-39 and beyond all reason and logic, was able to land
safely. Well, he’s back!
The fans love to see new aircraft on the field and this year we
have a few. Pete Zaccagnino, who won in the past, is bringing a Vampire. And
Vicky Benzing is bringing the world’s only L-139. The big difference between an L-39 and an
L-139 is the engine. I’ll let you head down to the Jet Pit to learn more about
this one and only machine and their unique pilot.
Biplanes
Biplanes have 14 Racers including three Rookies! Carl
Robinson, Richard Anderson and Anthony Oshinuga will be joining us for the
first time in September.
Returning Champion, Jake Stewart will be there to go head to
head against Tom Aberle in Phantom. I’ll probably have a great seat in the back
of the Gold to watch the action and to stay out of the way when they pass me.

Formula 1
There are 17 F1’s on the list currently, including several
of the guys who flew during the Air Race 1 Series in Tunisia and Spain earlier
this year. The final leg in the Air Race 1 Tour will be at Reno. Thom Richard
won the last two races, and the real action will be between him and Steve
Senegal.
Maybe Vito Wypaechtiger may be there to throw a monkey wrench in their
plans – or will it be Justin Phillipson in his new Racer.
Again, wake up early and watch the fun when the Biplanes and
the Formula 1s take the course! You won't regret it!
T6
Will it be between Dennis Buehn and John Lohmar again this
year? Or will Nick Macy and Six Cat be
back in fighting form and take the win? Or will Chris Rushing or Gene McNeely –
or maybe one of the new racers, take the lead?
There is a lot of talent in the T6 Class and anyone could be
the winner this year. Let’s see what happens.
Final Lap
This is another pivotal year for the National Championship
Air Races. The new President has been baptized by fire – with everyone wanting
to be heard. We know that we all need to work together if this is going to continue to happen.
So, fans – please do your part. Support your favorite teams
by buying T-shirts and other swag. Support the Races by buying a ticket and
being there to cheer us on every day.
Spread the word – bring a friend – introduce someone to the
races by sharing this column or a video or a few pictures from the past years. We
need you there!
I’ll be there. The whole Ruby Crew will be together again –
racing and spectating and having a blast!

What’s new at the Reno Air Races?
The big news everyone is talking about is the hiring of Mike Crowell as the president and chief executive officer of the National Championship Air Races. After a few visits with Mike, I can say that I am very happy to see someone of his caliber taking the reins.
“We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Mike’s caliber step in to take the helm at the Reno Air Races,” said John Agather, chairman of the RARA board of directors. “We are looking to Mike to bring his leadership, experience and expertise in running efficient organizations to the Reno Air Races so that we can ensure this important northern Nevada event is successful for many years to come.”
Crowell’s specialty is turning around financially stressed organizations. That is exactly what we need. We also need someone who is not looking at it one year at a time, but sees a future for the Races and looks forward to that future.
“I spent my entire career ensuring that the organizations I worked for saw results – results in sales, results in efficient operations, results in the bottom line,” said Crowell. “I’m looking forward to putting those skills to work for an event that not only makes a huge economic impact on our community, but one that air racing fans from literally all over the world come to enjoy each year. I’m fortunate to have the help of our dedicated staff, a supportive board of directors, our sponsors and amazing volunteers in that effort.”

Personally, I believe Mike is just the guy to turn the races
around. We spoke of the five things he feels we need to focus on and they are
all related – they include… Sponsorship, Attendance, Media exposure, Prize
Money to bring in more Racers and Entertainment, keeping the event entertaining
to everyone.
He is already working on Sponsorship. He understands that
finding the right partner for the Races is critical to our future.
He spoke about how to bring the fans back. We need to find
out what do we need to do to get the gate back up to previous levels. And that
is coupled with all of the other points. Especially bringing in more racers and
making a more entertaining event for everyone.
To that end, the Breitling Jet Team will be there to
entertain us between races. This is their first trip to the USA and we are
pleased they have added us to their schedule.

Dick Cole, Doolittle’s Co-pilot during the Tokyo Raid, is
scheduled to be there with us in September. This will coincide with the Tora
Tora Tora exhibition at Reno this year. For those of you unfamiliar, this is a
very exciting Aviation Event filled with history, excellent flying and KaBOOMS.
The Races bring in an estimated $65Million in economic value
to the Reno-Tahoe area. And after such a dismal ski season this year, the area
really could use the help.
Much has been said about the fact that Mike is not a pilot. I
don’t think that is an issue.
We have pilots – over 100 of them, we call them
Racers – but what we need is for someone with vision, who can balance a
checkbook. I believe the Reno Air Race Association may have just found that
guy.
I wish Mike and the Board all the luck in the world. I will
be there in September! How about you!?
